The Sierra Club is kicking off its bike initiative with a bike ride on Saturday, April 20th at 10 am. The bike ride, with discussion, will loop through Silver Spring and Takoma Park. The ride assembles at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring near the skating rink. It’s a great way to show your support for bicycling in Montgomery County. Dan Reed (blogger for GGW) and Jack Cochrane (MoBike) will be leading the ride. The route includes the Metropolitan Branch Trail, Sligo Creek Trail, and a few city streets, exploring a variety of semi-urban biking landscapes. Stronger riders can continue on to Wheaton. MCBAG (Montgomery County Bicycle Action Group) meets tonight (Thursday 10/18) from 7 to 9 pm at MCDOT’s Gaithersburg office. Meetings are held at 7 pm on the third Thursday of the month in most months. The meeting location rotates between Gaithersburg and Rockville, and this one is in Gaithersburg. The address is 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg on the 4th floor. There’s a security person in the lobby who can direct you if you need help. You can bring your bike up the elevator.

Don’t forget the North Branch Trail meeting tonight! (September 19th, 2012). The Montgomery County Parks Department is holding the meeting to discuss the design of the planned North Branch Hiker-Biker Trail. The Parks Department will discuss possible alignments and alternatives and ask for input from people attending the meeting. The North Branch Trail is proposed to connect the Lake Frank Lakeside Trail to Bowie Mill Park near Derwood. The trail will be located in upper Rock Creek Park and the North Branch Stream Valley Park. For a map and other information, go to this project page. The Montgomery County Planning Board is holding a public hearing on the draft 2012 Park Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan on Thursday May 24, 2012. This plan includes important elements related to hard surface and natural surface trails in the parks. The plan addresses the mission of our parks, priorities, upcoming projects, park budgets, and more. The county’s long time bike coordinator, Gail Tait-Nouri, just retired, and its a good occasion to improve MCBAG. Some questions: Should MCDOT have to send all bike projects (and key road projects) to MCBAG for review and input? How do we make sure EVERY project is reviewed?
