Bike route signs: a matter of format

Montgomery County is preparing to post bike route signs along some long new bike routes like this one parallel to Georgia Avenue.  The county’s Bicycle Action Group (MCBAG) is weighing in on the routes, sign placement and sign format.  The routes will typically be 5 to 8 miles long. Please look at the wayfinding sign formats here on NACTO’s excellent website.   It shows what other jurisdictions have done. Based on signs the county has already installed, we (MCBAG) are recommending the following basic format where each sign has up to three panels per post. Top Panel: Just a bike symbol and the words “BIKE ROUTE” Middle Panel: Big arrow(s) pointing along the main route.  This panel is omitted if […]

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is now advertising to fill its vacant bicycle coordinator position.   Below is the basic information for the posting. (I’m omitting a few things, so don’t consider this to be the actual posting.   For more information go to the county’s careers web page, click on “Search Jobs” and search for posting “IRC9758”, though the search function isn’t always working).  This culminates a push by bike advocates in the county to see a new coordinator hired to replace the outgoing one. Excerpts from the job posting: Job Title: Capital Projects Manager, Grade 28 Location: Gaithersburg, MD Organizational name:  Department of Transportation – Division of Transportation Engineering Description:  This position will serve as the Capital Project Manager […]

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation publishes a resurfacing schedule of upcoming road resurfacing projects.  Why is this useful?  Because roadway resurfacing (repaving) requires repainting all the lines.  White lines.  Yellow lines.  Dashed lines.  It’s a chance to widen lanes, add bike lanes and fix configurations that impact cyclists.  On some roads we’ve been chomping at the bit to have MCDOT redo the striping. On these projects MCDOT needs input from cyclists.  Many projects are brought up at MCBAG meetings.  But sometimes they aren’t.  It’s essential to keep an eye on the resurfacing schedule.
